Abstract
Background: Injuries are defined as physical or psychological harm, with or without intention, from external causes including transport accident, self-inflicted injury, assault, and poisoning, and not from pathological conditions. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has conducted discharge summary abstract-based injury surveys since 2004.

Current status: In 2015, 17.3% (1,192,409 persons) of total hospital admissions was owing to injuries. The injury discharge rate per 100,000 persons was 1.3 times higher in males (2,644) than females (2,068). As for age, the injury discharge rate per 100,000 persons among people aged 75 or more (6,101) was 6.8 times higher than among those aged 0-4 (901). From 2004 to 2015, the injury discharge rate per 100,000 persons has been constantly increasing, indicating markedly rising pattern in the group aged 75 years and over. With regard to the aspect of intention, most injuries were unintentional (95.5%). The unintentional injuries comprised falls (37.7%), transport accidents (35.6%), and impact/strikes (10.2%) in descending order, whereas intentional injuries were categorized into three types: 1.7% self-inflicted harm (poisoning 79.0%, stabs 13.3%, asphyxiation 2.9%), 2.1% injuries due to assault (impact/strikes 88.5%, stabs 5.7%, falls 1.3%), and 0.7% others.
Future Perspective: Each year, more than 4 million people visit medical institutions because of injuries. Direct medical cost due to injury amounts to 4.1 trillion won and when their chronic courses are taken into account, the cost is expected to soar. To reduce the growing burden of injuries, the epidemiological characteristics of those occurrences is needed to be identified at the first step.
